Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
