Pentagon Report Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public later this week.
